What does amlodipine treat?
- It treats high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, including angina. It does not relieve a chest-pain attack that has already started.
Can it cause swollen ankles?
- Yes. Ankle or foot swelling is a known side effect. Tell your prescriber rather than assuming that swelling is harmless or changing your dose yourself.
Do I need to take it with food?
- No. Amlodipine can be taken with or without a meal. Keep to the schedule on your prescription label.
How does amlodipine work?
- It is a calcium channel blocker. It relaxes blood vessels and helps blood reach the heart. Feeling well does not mean you no longer need it. Do not stop or change the prescription without speaking with your care team. MedlinePlus
What if I miss a tablet?
- The Norvasc tablet leaflet says to take a missed dose when remembered, unless more than 12 hours have passed since it was due. After that, skip it and take the next dose at the regular time. Which symptoms need attention?
- Dizziness, tiredness and flushing can occur. Contact your prescriber for persistent or troublesome symptoms, including ankle swelling. New or worsening chest pain needs prompt medical attention; severe or ongoing chest pain is an emergency. Call 911. Amlodipine is not a rescue medicine. What should my pharmacist check?
- Bring all prescriptions and supplements, including cholesterol medicines. Amlodipine can change the safe dose of simvastatin. Tell your team about liver disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding.
