Important warning
- Important treatment warning: Some people do not activate clopidogrel well because of differences in the CYP2C19 gene. It may protect them less effectively. Your prescriber can decide whether testing or another medicine is appropriate. Do not stop or switch it yourself. Clopidogrel boxed warning
What does clopidogrel do?
- It makes platelets less likely to stick together, helping prevent harmful clots in selected heart and blood-vessel conditions.
Can I take it with food?
- Yes. It can be taken with or without food, following the schedule on your prescription.
Can I take omeprazole with it?
- Omeprazole and esomeprazole can reduce clopidogrel's effect. Ask your pharmacist or prescriber for an appropriate heartburn plan; do not simply separate the doses or stop clopidogrel.
What if I miss a dose?
- Take it when remembered unless the next dose is almost due; then skip it. Do not take an extra dose to catch up. MedlinePlus
What bleeding should I report?
- Bruising or bleeding more easily can occur. Contact your clinician about unusual bleeding. Bleeding that will not stop, vomiting blood, or black or bloody stools needs urgent medical attention. Sudden weakness or speech trouble needs emergency help. MedlinePlus
What about surgery or dental work?
- Tell the clinician that you take clopidogrel well before a planned procedure. The team must balance bleeding and clotting risks and give any stopping and restarting instructions. Stopping without a plan can increase cardiovascular risk. Clopidogrel label, bleeding and discontinuation warnings
Should I also take aspirin?
- Some treatment plans intentionally use both medicines. Follow your own plan; do not add or remove aspirin yourself. Check before using NSAIDs, other blood thinners or supplements. MedlinePlus
