What is fluoxetine for?
- This SSRI treats depression and certain other conditions, including OCD, bulimia and panic disorder. Your prescriber can explain your treatment goal.
Does it work immediately?
- Full benefit can take several weeks. Keep follow-up appointments and report changes rather than increasing the dose yourself.
Is every capsule taken daily?
- No. A delayed-release product has a weekly schedule. Check your bottle; do not use daily directions for a weekly prescription.
Can I take it with food?
- Fluoxetine can be taken with or without food. Follow your prescribed times. Swallow delayed-release capsules whole. Ask your pharmacist to clarify the exact formulation if the appearance or instructions change. MedlinePlus
What if I miss a daily dose?
- Take it when remembered unless the next dose is almost due; then skip it. Never double up. If you use the weekly product, ask for product-specific missed-dose instructions. MedlinePlus
Why do I need a plan before switching medicines?
- Fluoxetine stays in the body for weeks after stopping. A psychiatric MAO inhibitor generally requires at least five weeks after fluoxetine, sometimes longer; the reverse switch has a different interval. Your prescriber must manage the switch. What should I report or check?
- Discuss troublesome nausea, sleep changes or sexual side effects. Fever with confusion, muscle stiffness or a racing heartbeat needs urgent care because it may signal serotonin syndrome.
