What is glipizide for?
- It helps lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin release. It is not a treatment for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Before food or with food?
- Immediate-release tablets are generally taken about 30 minutes before a meal. Extended-release tablets are taken with breakfast or the first main meal. Follow your exact label.
Can I crush an extended-release tablet?
- No. Swallow it whole; do not split, chew or crush it.
What if I miss a dose or cannot eat?
- Ask for written instructions for missed doses, skipped meals and illness. If you are unsure, call your pharmacist or diabetes team. Do not double a missed dose. Your meal schedule matters to the safety of this medicine. MedlinePlus
How do I recognize low blood sugar?
- Symptoms can include shakiness, sweating, hunger, dizziness or confusion. Check your glucose and follow your clinician's low-blood-sugar plan. Ask what fast-acting sugar to carry and whether you should have prescribed rescue glucagon. Repeated episodes need a treatment review. NIDDK: low blood glucose
What should my pharmacist check?
- Mention kidney or liver problems, other diabetes medicines, alcohol use and all new prescriptions. Older adults and people taking certain heart medicines may be less aware of low blood sugar.
