Before every injection
- Read the insulin name and concentration on the label.
- New needle every time. Prime the pen per its instructions.
- Rotate sites. Avoid lumps, pits, and scars.
Never
- Never share a pen or needle, even with family.
- Never convert a concentration or count clicks.
- Never double a dose or guess after a missed dose.
Low blood sugar signs
- Shaking, sweating, hunger, fast heartbeat.
- Dizziness, irritability, confusion, blurred vision.
Treating a low, if awake
- 15 grams of fast carbohydrate.
- Recheck in 15 minutes. Repeat if still low.
- Then eat the planned meal or snack if due.
Emergency. Call 911
- Unconscious or seizing: no food or drink by mouth.
- Give glucagon and place the person on their side.
- Call 911.
Sick days
- Never stop basal insulin on my own.
- Check glucose more often. Check ketones when directed.
- Call for vomiting, ketones, or out of range readings.
