Before every injection

  • Read the insulin name and concentration on the label.
  • New needle every time. Prime the pen per its instructions.
  • Rotate sites. Avoid lumps, pits, and scars.

Never

  • Never share a pen or needle, even with family.
  • Never convert a concentration or count clicks.
  • Never double a dose or guess after a missed dose.

Low blood sugar signs

  • Shaking, sweating, hunger, fast heartbeat.
  • Dizziness, irritability, confusion, blurred vision.

Treating a low, if awake

  • 15 grams of fast carbohydrate.
  • Recheck in 15 minutes. Repeat if still low.
  • Then eat the planned meal or snack if due.

Emergency. Call 911

  • Unconscious or seizing: no food or drink by mouth.
  • Give glucagon and place the person on their side.
  • Call 911.

Sick days

  • Never stop basal insulin on my own.
  • Check glucose more often. Check ketones when directed.
  • Call for vomiting, ketones, or out of range readings.
