Taking it right

  • Once a day, at the same time every day.
  • Lantus is U-100 insulin glargine. Check the label every time.
  • It is basal insulin, not mealtime insulin.

Pen steps (SoloStar)

  • New needle. Prime with the 2 unit safety test.
  • Dial my dose, inject, hold and count slowly to 10.
  • Rotate sites. Never share the pen or needle.

If I miss a dose

  • Check my glucose. Follow my written plan.
  • No plan for this: call my diabetes team.
  • Never double or take two basal doses close together.

Low blood sugar, if awake

  • Shaking, sweating, hunger, dizziness, confusion.
  • 15 grams of fast carbohydrate. Recheck in 15 minutes.
  • Repeat if still low. Then eat if a meal is due.

Emergency. Call 911

  • Unconscious or seizing: no food or drink by mouth.
  • Give glucagon and place the person on their side.
  • Vomiting, fruity breath, or deep breathing may be ketoacidosis.

Storage

  • Unopened: in the refrigerator, never frozen.
  • In use pen: room temperature, discard after 28 days.
  • Never leave it in a hot or freezing car.
