Taking it right
- Once a day, at the same time every day.
- Lantus is U-100 insulin glargine. Check the label every time.
- It is basal insulin, not mealtime insulin.
Pen steps (SoloStar)
- New needle. Prime with the 2 unit safety test.
- Dial my dose, inject, hold and count slowly to 10.
- Rotate sites. Never share the pen or needle.
If I miss a dose
- Check my glucose. Follow my written plan.
- No plan for this: call my diabetes team.
- Never double or take two basal doses close together.
Low blood sugar, if awake
- Shaking, sweating, hunger, dizziness, confusion.
- 15 grams of fast carbohydrate. Recheck in 15 minutes.
- Repeat if still low. Then eat if a meal is due.
Emergency. Call 911
- Unconscious or seizing: no food or drink by mouth.
- Give glucagon and place the person on their side.
- Vomiting, fruity breath, or deep breathing may be ketoacidosis.
Storage
- Unopened: in the refrigerator, never frozen.
- In use pen: room temperature, discard after 28 days.
- Never leave it in a hot or freezing car.
