Important warning
- Important: Lisinopril can harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and contact your prescriber immediately. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing, needs emergency care. Call 911. Prescribing information
What is lisinopril for?
- It treats high blood pressure. It is also used with other medicines for heart failure and after certain heart attacks.
Can lisinopril cause a cough?
- Yes. A persistent dry cough can occur. Tell your prescriber; do not assume every cough comes from this medicine.
Can I take it with food?
- Yes. Food does not change how much lisinopril your body absorbs. Follow your prescription schedule.
How does it help?
- Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor. It reduces signals that tighten blood vessels, helping blood flow more easily. Keep taking it as prescribed even when you feel well. High blood pressure may cause no symptoms. MedlinePlus
What if I miss a dose?
- Take it when you remember unless the next dose is almost due. In that case, skip the missed dose. Never take extra to catch up. If you are unsure about the timing, ask your pharmacist. MedlinePlus
What should I check with my pharmacist?
- Potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes, ibuprofen or naproxen, and some other prescriptions can cause problems. Tell your team about all medicines and supplements. Lisinopril must not be taken within 36 hours of sacubitril/valsartan (Entresto); a prescriber must manage that switch. Prescribing information, sections 4 and 7
What symptoms and tests matter?
- Report troublesome dizziness or faintness. Contact your care team if vomiting or diarrhea makes it difficult to stay hydrated. Keep blood-pressure checks and ordered kidney-function and potassium blood tests. Facial or throat swelling is an emergency even if you have taken lisinopril before without trouble.
