Should I take it with food?
- Yes. Follow the directions on your dispensed product; food helps absorption and tolerability.
Are Macrobid and other nitrofurantoin capsules interchangeable schedules?
- No. Check the formulation and prescription label rather than copying someone else's schedule.
Does it treat a kidney infection?
- Macrobid is for certain bladder infections, not kidney infections. Fever with flank/back pain, vomiting or worsening illness needs prompt medical assessment.
What if I miss a dose or feel better?
- Take a missed dose when remembered unless the next is almost due; then skip it. Do not double. Complete the prescribed course unless your clinician changes treatment. Tell the clinician if symptoms do not improve or worsen. MedlinePlus
What should the pharmacist check first?
- Mention kidney disease, pregnancy, breastfeeding, G6PD deficiency and any previous nitrofurantoin-related liver problem. Kidney function affects whether it is appropriate. Macrobid is contraindicated at term (38–42 weeks), during labor/delivery or when labor is imminent. Contact the prescriber promptly if this applies. Macrobid label
- Check antacids and other medicines with the pharmacist, particularly magnesium-trisilicate antacids and probenecid. Do not add these on your own. Macrobid label
What symptoms need attention?
- Nausea can occur. Stop and seek urgent advice for new cough, chest pain, breathing difficulty, yellow skin/eyes or numbness/tingling. Severe breathing trouble or facial/throat swelling warrants emergency care. If treatment is long term, ask about lung, liver and kidney monitoring. Macrobid label
