Taking it right
- Take it with every meal, usually 3 times a day.
- It only works with food.
- Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush or chew.
If I skip a meal
- Skip that dose of sevelamer too.
- Take the next dose with my next full meal.
- Never two doses at once.
Thyroid medicine
- Keep it well separated from sevelamer.
- Often about 4 hours apart.
- My pharmacist will confirm my exact gap.
Call the doctor if
- Nausea or vomiting that does not settle.
- Constipation with trouble passing stool.
- Muscle cramps or tingling.
Emergency. Go to the ER
- Severe stomach pain with a bloated belly
- and no bowel movements.
Good to remember
- Generic sevelamer is the same as brand Renvela.
- Tell the pharmacist every medicine I take.
