What does it do?
Spironolactone blocks aldosterone, a hormone that affects salt and water balance. It is used for selected heart-failure, blood-pressure, fluid-retention and aldosterone-related conditions.
Should I take potassium with this water pill?
Do not add potassium supplements or potassium salt substitutes without advice. Spironolactone can raise potassium to dangerous levels.
Why do I need blood tests?
Potassium and kidney function need monitoring, including soon after starting or changing treatment. Keep the schedule your clinician gives you.

How should I take it?

Which symptoms should I report?
Report marked weakness, unusual tingling, a slow or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, or much less urine. Fainting or severe breathing difficulty needs emergency care. What should my pharmacist check?
Share all medicines, especially ACE inhibitors, ARBs, trimethoprim, NSAIDs and potassium products. Some combinations increase potassium or kidney problems.
