Important warning

Is trazodone a sleeping pill?
- It is FDA-approved for depression. Clinicians also sometimes prescribe it off-label for sleep; that is a different treatment purpose. Ask what benefit is expected for you.
Should I take it with food?
- Standard tablets are taken shortly after a meal or light snack. Follow the schedule on your prescription.
Can it make me dizzy or sleepy?
- Yes. Stand up slowly and avoid driving until you know its effects. Alcohol and other sedating medicines can worsen impairment.
What if I miss a dose or want to stop?
- Take a missed dose when remembered unless the next is almost due; then skip it. Do not double up. Ask your prescriber before stopping; a gradual reduction may prevent withdrawal symptoms. MedlinePlus
Which symptoms are emergencies?
- An erection lasting more than four hours needs emergency care, even without pain; stop trazodone and seek help immediately. Fever with confusion, agitation or stiff muscles can signal serotonin syndrome and needs urgent care. Fainting or an irregular heartbeat also needs prompt medical assessment. What should my pharmacist check?
- Share other antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, tramadol, sleep medicines, blood-pressure medicines, blood thinners and supplements. Mention falls, heart-rhythm problems, pregnancy and any bipolar history. Do not combine sleep products on your own. MedlinePlus
How do I judge whether it is helping?
- Discuss your treatment goal and bothersome effects at follow-up. Improvement in depression can take weeks; feeling sleepy is not by itself proof that depression is improving. MedlinePlus
