The real story behind this product

What chain pharmacies never explain.

Mucinex built a $500 million brand around two old molecules: guaifenesin (an expectorant patented in 1952) and dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant since the 1950s) by putting them in an extended-release tablet and marketing them brilliantly.

The science is real. Guaifenesin thins and loosens mucus, making it easier for your airways to clear. Dextromethorphan suppresses the cough reflex at the brain level. Critical when you're trying to sleep or work. The extended-release formula means one tablet works for 12 hours instead of 4.

At Fairview, the generic version contains the exact same active ingredients, same doses, same extended-release mechanism. At $7 less per box.

Dr. Mike's clinical commentary
This is the gold standard for chest congestion. And I mean that literally. It's what I tell patients to use when they call me and say I'm coughing up thick mucus and can't stop coughing. Guaifenesin loosens the mucus so you can cough it out productively. Dextromethorphan quiets the reflex cough so you're not coughing just from irritation. Take it every 12 hours. Not every 4. And drink extra water while on this. Hydration is what actually makes the guaifenesin work. The pill does nothing without water.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

How is this different from the brand name on the same shelf?

The generic products we carry contain the same FDA-approved active ingredient, in the same dosage form, at the same strength as the brand-name product. The FDA requires generic medicines to meet bioequivalence standards before approval. The main difference customers notice is the price, not the medicine.

How soon will my order ship?

Orders ship within 1 to 2 business days from our pharmacy in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. You will receive a tracking number once your package leaves the pharmacy. Free shipping on orders over $50.

What is your return policy if it doesn't work for me?

Unopened products in their original sealed packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund. For safety reasons, opened medications are not returnable. If something arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us within 7 days and we will make it right.

Can I take this with my prescription medications?

Some OTC products interact with common prescriptions. We strongly recommend a free pharmacist consultation before ordering if you take blood pressure medication, blood thinners, thyroid medication, antidepressants, or other prescriptions. Call 601-544-4871 or use the Ask the Pharmacist form on the site.

Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Some OTC products are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Before ordering, please request a free pharmacist consultation. A pharmacist can confirm whether this product is appropriate for your situation.

One product is good. The kit is the protocol.

Dr. Mike doesn't hand patients single products. He hands them protocols. The Complete Cold & Flu Kit is the full version of what most people need. And it skips the $50 minimum.
