A Letter to Hattiesburg: Why I Bought Fairview Pharmacy and What I Promise to Always Be

An open letter from a Hattiesburg pharmacist on why he bought Fairview, and what he promises.

What you handed me in 2016

When I bought Fairview, I inherited more than a building. I inherited generations of relationships. Patients whose parents and grandparents had filled prescriptions at the same counter. A community that had grown up with this pharmacy as part of its daily rhythm. The trust that had been built before me was a gift, and I have never treated it casually.

The Winbornes built something that lasted. I came in not to replace it but to carry it forward. The values stay. The names get added. The work continues.

Why I chose Hattiesburg

I grew up understanding that healthcare in Mississippi is harder than it should be. After Xavier University of Louisiana for my PharmD in 2012 and Emory for my MPH, I worked at Walmart in Houma, then at CVS in Greenville, then at a 24 hour CVS pharmacy, the last in Mississippi to discontinue overnight service. The store I managed administered more vaccinations than any other in the district for two consecutive years. I had options to take my career anywhere.

I chose Hattiesburg because this is where the work matters most. Mississippi has more healthcare gaps than most states. The Pine Belt has communities that get overlooked by every healthcare model designed for big cities. A community pharmacy that takes the work seriously can make a measurable difference here. I wanted to do that work where it counts.

What I promise

These are not slogans. These are commitments I plan to keep.

I promise we will know your name

When you walk in or call, you are not a transaction. The continuity that gets lost at chain pharmacies is the thing that makes pharmacy work. We pay attention. We remember.

I promise we will answer the phone

Hold times here are not what they are at the big chains. We staff for the work. We pick up.

I promise we will tell you the truth

When you ask whether you really need that medication, whether that supplement is doing anything for you, whether your current dose still makes sense, we will give you the honest answer. Sometimes the honest answer is yes. Sometimes it is no. Sometimes it is, we should ask your doctor about this. We will not sell you a product you do not need.

I promise we will give you time

Counseling on every new medication. Free medication reviews. Vaccine consultations. The 10 minutes that solve problems before they become bigger problems. We make time for the work that matters.

I promise we will keep showing up

Independent pharmacies are closing across Mississippi. We are not going anywhere. We adapted to the operating environment, built revenue lines that PBMs do not control, and made the decisions early that let us stay. As long as Hattiesburg keeps showing up for us, we will keep showing up for Hattiesburg.

What comes next

This is a moment of change for us. We are relocating in early fall 2026, from 500 Katie Avenue to a new home at 302 Broadway Drive in Hattiesburg, which lets us serve more patients with more services and more space. The new building was designed around patient care, not around the operational shortcuts that have become standard in modern pharmacy. There will be room for consultations. Room for vaccines. Room for the conversations that matter.

We are expanding Wellness+, our national OTC line, which lets us serve patients across the country with the same pharmacist guided product selection we offer in Hattiesburg. The economic model that comes from a national e commerce line is what keeps us viable as an independent serving Mississippi. The patient buying a vitamin in Seattle helps fund the medication review I do for an older adult on Katie Avenue. The two are connected.

We are not getting smaller. We are getting more useful. Hattiesburg, you are the reason.

Rooted in care. Built for everyone.

Our tagline is not marketing copy. It is a description of how we try to operate. Rooted in care means we are anchored in clinical work, not in volume metrics. Built for everyone means we serve the patient on Medicare, the uninsured patient, the patient who drives an hour from another county, the patient buying their first prenatal vitamin, the patient picking up their last prescription before hospice. The work has to be for everyone. Otherwise it is not pharmacy. It is retail.

Thank you

Hattiesburg, thank you. For 48 years of trust. For the patients who chose us when the chains came. For the families who introduced us to their children and their parents. For the recommendations made over kitchen tables. For showing up. We are here because you are here. That is the entire equation, and I hope I get to keep being the one who signs the bottles for as long as the work is good.

Come see us, and call us if you need anything. And know that whatever else changes in pharmacy over the next 10 years, this part will not.
