Why was this prescribed?
- Hydrochlorothiazide, often shortened to HCTZ, treats high blood pressure and certain causes of fluid retention.
Will I urinate more?
- It is a diuretic, or water pill, that helps the kidneys remove salt and water. Ask about timing if bathroom trips disrupt sleep.
Should I start a potassium supplement?
- Do not start one on your own. The right plan depends on blood tests, kidney function and your other medicines.
How do I take it and handle a missed dose?
- Use the schedule on your bottle. Some fluid-retention plans use selected days rather than every day. Take a missed dose when remembered unless the next is almost due; then skip it. Do not take extra to catch up. MedlinePlus
Why are blood tests important?
- This medicine can change sodium, potassium and other electrolytes. Keep ordered blood tests. Report marked thirst, muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, faintness or reduced urine.
