What is losartan for?
- It treats high blood pressure. Certain patients also receive it for kidney protection in type 2 diabetes or to reduce stroke risk with specific heart findings.
Does it need food?
- No. It can be taken with or without a meal. Follow the times on your prescription label.
Can I use a potassium salt substitute?
- Check first. Losartan can raise potassium, so supplements and potassium-containing salt substitutes may be unsafe for you.
How does it work?
- Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker, or ARB. It blocks a signal that tightens blood vessels. The full blood-pressure benefit can take several weeks. Keep taking it as directed even when you feel well. MedlinePlus
What if I miss a dose?
- Take it when remembered unless the next dose is almost due; then skip it. Do not double up. MedlinePlus
Which symptoms should I report?
- Tell your care team about severe dizziness, fainting, reduced urine, or vomiting and diarrhea that make it hard to stay hydrated. Facial or throat swelling or trouble breathing needs emergency care. Losartan label, warnings and patient counseling
What should my pharmacist check?
- Mention ibuprofen, naproxen, potassium products and other blood-pressure medicines. Some combinations affect kidney function or potassium. Keep ordered kidney and potassium tests and bring home blood-pressure readings to follow-up. Losartan label
