What is it for?
Omeprazole reduces stomach acid. Prescription uses include reflux-related injury and ulcers. OTC products treat frequent heartburn in adults.
Before or after food?
It is generally taken before a meal. Follow your product's instructions; prescribed schedules depend on the condition.
Will it stop heartburn immediately?
OTC omeprazole is not immediate relief. It may take one to four days for its full effect.

Is the OTC course the same as a prescription?
No. OTC labeling describes a 14-day course and says not to repeat it more often than every four months unless a clinician directs you. Prescription treatment may have a different duration. What if I miss a dose or have trouble swallowing?

Which symptoms should not be self-treated?
