What is tamsulosin for?
- It helps urine flow by relaxing muscles around the prostate and bladder. Its labeled use is urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate; it is not a prostate-cancer treatment.
When should I take it?
- Take your prescribed capsule about 30 minutes after the same meal each day. Swallow it whole; do not open, crush or chew it.
Can it make me dizzy?
- Yes, especially when standing up, starting treatment or increasing a dose. Rise slowly and avoid driving until you know its effects.
What if I miss a dose?
- Take it when remembered unless the next dose is almost due; then skip it. Never double up. If you have stopped for several days, contact your prescriber before restarting; the restarting dose may need to change. MedlinePlus
Why does my eye surgeon need to know?
- Tamsulosin can affect the iris during cataract or glaucoma surgery. Tell your surgeon if you take it now or have taken it before. Do not stop it yourself as a way to prevent the problem; coordinate with your care team. Tamsulosin label, eye-surgery warning
What should my pharmacist check?
- Mention erectile-dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil, other alpha blockers, and all prescriptions and supplements. Some combinations can lower blood pressure too much or increase tamsulosin exposure. Share any severe sulfa allergy. Tamsulosin label, warnings and interactions
Which symptoms need a call?
- Report severe or persistent dizziness and fainting. Trouble breathing or facial or throat swelling needs emergency care. An erection that does not go away needs emergency medical attention. Changes in ejaculation can occur; discuss troublesome effects with your clinician. MedlinePlus
