Important warning
- Pregnancy warning: Do not use valsartan during pregnancy. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and contact your prescriber immediately because it can seriously harm an unborn baby. Discuss a different treatment before a planned pregnancy. MedlinePlus valsartan
What does it treat?
- Valsartan is an ARB used for high blood pressure and certain heart conditions. Your reason for treatment affects your schedule.
Can I take it with food?
- Tablets may be taken with or without food. Follow the times on your prescription label.
Is valsartan the same as Entresto?
- No. Entresto contains both sacubitril and valsartan. Do not substitute it for plain valsartan or take both without your prescriber checking the plan.
Can I use potassium or a salt substitute?
- Check first. Potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes and some other medicines can raise potassium too much. Your clinician may order blood tests for potassium and kidney function. Do not choose a supplement based only on the word "heart healthy." Valsartan label, warnings and interactions
What if I miss a dose?
- Take it when remembered unless your next dose is almost due; then skip it. Do not double a dose. Continue your regular treatment even when you feel well. MedlinePlus
What symptoms or medicines should I discuss?
- Report faintness, vomiting or diarrhea that could leave you dehydrated. Ask before using ibuprofen, naproxen, lithium or other blood-pressure medicines. Kidney problems and very low blood pressure may require a treatment change. Swelling of the face, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing needs emergency care. Check the ingredients on every bottle
- Ask a Fairview pharmacist to review your medicine list or request a transfer. Prescription services are through the pharmacy, not the OTC shop. This guide is general education.
