Here's something most pharmacies won't tell you directly: phenylephrine is less effective than pseudoephedrine (the original Sudafed kept behind the pharmacy counter). Clinical studies show phenylephrine's decongestant effect is modest at the 10mg OTC dose.
So why does Dr. Mike stock it? Because it's legal without ID, safe for short-term use, and helps a meaningful number of people with mild-to-moderate congestion. Especially sinus pressure. I'll be straight with you: phenylephrine is not as strong as pseudoephedrine. The studies are clear on that. But it works for mild-to-moderate sinus pressure and congestion, it's available without showing ID, and it's safe for short-term use. I stock it because my patients need options.
