The real story behind this product

What chain pharmacies never explain.

Heartburn happens when stomach acid splashes back up into the esophagus, a tube lined with tissue that was not designed to handle acid. The burning sensation is acid contact with esophageal tissue. It's not dangerous when occasional, but it is immediately uncomfortable, and the faster you neutralize the acid, the faster the burn stops.

Calcium carbonate is an alkali, a base. When it contacts stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), a simple acid base neutralization reaction occurs. The acid is converted to water, carbon dioxide, and calcium chloride. The burning stops. That reaction happens on contact, which is why calcium carbonate is the fastest acting antacid available.

The calcium in every tablet is also absorbed into your system. 500mg of calcium carbonate contains approximately 200mg of elemental calcium, meaningful for women watching bone density, adults over 50, and anyone who doesn't get enough calcium from diet. It's the only antacid that does double duty.

The comparison: this 96 count generic calcium carbonate costs $4.26 at Fairview. Tums 96 count retails for $6 to $8 at chain pharmacies. Same molecule. Same dose. The price difference exists because Fairview isn't paying for Tums' national advertising budget.

Dr. Mike's clinical commentary
Calcium carbonate is the fastest antacid you can use. It neutralizes acid on contact, which means relief in under five minutes. It's also safe during pregnancy for occasional heartburn, which very few heartburn medications can claim. Two clinical points: don't use antacids as a substitute for an H2 blocker or PPI if your heartburn is happening more than twice a week. That frequency is a signal to step up to a stronger mechanism. And antacids can interfere with the absorption of certain medications, thyroid medication, some antibiotics, and osteoporosis drugs, if taken within 2 hours of each other.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is the generic really the same as the brand?

Yes, by FDA requirement. Generic medications must contain the same active ingredient, at the same dose, in the same form, with the same route of administration as the brand name product. The FDA's bioequivalence standard requires generics to perform within 80 to 125 percent of the brand's absorption profile. Same active ingredient is not a marketing claim. It's a regulatory fact.

How soon will my order ship?

Orders ship within 1 to 2 business days from our pharmacy in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. You'll receive a tracking number once your package leaves the pharmacy. Free shipping on orders over $50. Kit purchases skip the $50 minimum entirely.

What is your return policy?

Unopened products in their original sealed packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund. For safety reasons, opened medications are not returnable. If something arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us within 7 days and we'll make it right.

Can I take this with my prescription medications?

Many OTC gut products interact with common prescriptions, particularly thyroid medication, blood thinners, certain antibiotics, and other PPIs. We strongly recommend a free pharmacist consultation before ordering if you take any prescription medication. Call us at the pharmacy. Free consultation, no appointment.

Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Gut products vary significantly in pregnancy safety. Simethicone, calcium carbonate, and psyllium fiber are generally considered safe across all trimesters. PPIs (omeprazole) and Pepto-Bismol require physician guidance during pregnancy. Loperamide and laxatives should be discussed with your OB. Before ordering during pregnancy or breastfeeding, please request a free pharmacist consultation.

One product is good. The kit is the protocol.

Dr. Mike doesn't hand patients single products. He hands them protocols. The Fairview Acid Defense Protocol is the full version of what most people need. And it skips the $50 minimum.
