- Clean the wound with water first
- Apply a small amount directly to the affected area
- Allow to dry. Do not cover for small cuts and bites.
- For cold sores: apply at the earliest tingling sensation for best results
- Repeat 3 to 4 times daily as needed

Why this still exists at Fairview.
Most antiseptics clean a wound. They do not reduce pain. Most topical pain relievers soothe. They do not disinfect. Campho Phenique does both simultaneously, which is why it has been in American medicine cabinets since 1887 and gets requested by name at the Fairview counter every week.
Camphor provides immediate cooling to warming pain relief and counter irritation. Phenol provides broad spectrum antiseptic action that kills bacteria on contact. Two priorities. One application.
Campho Phenique is the dual action first aid product most people do not realize they have been missing. Standard antiseptics sting and do not reduce pain. Standard pain relievers do not disinfect. This does both in one application. I particularly appreciate it for cold sores. Phenol has genuine antiviral activity against HSV 1 and works best when applied at the very first tingling sensation before the blister forms.
